There is excitement in the air on the Arts Campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) as staff and students are gearing up for the annual TUT Arts Festival from 26 to 28 September.
The TUT Arts Festival forms part of the Faculty of Arts and Design’s dynamic academic programme, creating a platform for our students to rub shoulders with industry partners, learn the latest technology and trends, and put their knowledge into practice through this stimulating experiential learning opportunity, shaping future-ready graduates.
This year’s theme is ARTIVISM and students will showcase how they address challenges through creativity, cultivating responsible citizenship and social awareness.
By combining resources and with the generous support of MGG Productions and Bespoke Entertainment Solutions, who sponsor the technical equipment for our open stage area during the Festival, the Faculty celebrates and showcases the remarkable talent of its students, staff, alumni and community.

The Department of Performing Arts will kick-start the Festival offering opera lovers the opportunity to enjoy the light-hearted L’elisir D’amore (The love potion) by Gaetano Donizetti. The Department contemporised the setting of this popular opera to make it more accessible to a young, modern audience and draw some attention to some historical facts in the City of Tshwane.
The Department has therefore renamed the opera, which originally takes place in a village setting in rural Italy, to Bhekamina, which takes place in Marabastad on Heritage Day. However, the production will still be performed in Italian at the Breytenbach Theatre, 137 Gerhard Moerdyk Street, Sunnyside, on 20, 22 and 30 September at 19:00, and a special matinee performance on 27 September at 13:00 to allow festivalgoers to schedule it in as part of their day programme.
As part of our Film and Talk Fest, the Department of Visual Communication will be hosting the Pretoria leg of the continent-wide African Film Festival, Tigritudes. As a highlight of this festival, we will screen the Kentridge 11 Drawings for Projection Film, followed by a Âpanel discussion. This will be followed by a one-day selected work screening of three of the feature films from the Tigritudes Film Fest selection. Through 126 films, 40 countries and 66 years of cinema history, Tigritudes* 1956-2021 draws a pan-African subjective and chronological anthology. Conceived by directors Dyana Gaye and Valérie Osouf, in collaboration with the Forum des images, this cycle explores the issues and forms of a still largely unknown cinematography. The TUT leg of the festival will cover works by filmmakers from South Africa, Mauritania and Algeria.
We are proud to host the book launch of the seminal book on the South African audio-visual industry, Richard Green in South African Film Forging Creative New Directions, by Prof Keyan Tomaselli and Richard Green (with a preface by Ntshaveni Walaruli) followed by a panel discussion with the authors joined by key figures from the South African industry. Tomaselli’s seminal book, The Cinema of Apartheid (1989), is seen as one of the most authoritative books on South African cinema history and is still a prescribed book at most international universities offering film programmes.
The glass manufacturers Ngwenya Glass will again be present to give the public a look behind the scenes while our students learn from master blowers.
Masterclasses, tech talks, a student film fest, industry and alumni talks and demonstrations, exhibitions, demonstrations, performances, flash fashion shows, big band jazz performances and open classes will form part of the exciting line-up, encompassing all facets of the arts, from the design and fine art disciplines to all the performing arts.
The Faculty will collaborate with the Sport and Recreation Management section of the Department of Marketing, Supply Chain and Sport Management, Faculty of Management Sciences, to "activate" ARTIVISM through an exciting sport and recreation journey. This will bring a new dynamic dimension to the Festival this year. Wall climbing, dodge ball and "art"chery, to name a few, will focus on problem-solving skills, teamwork, creativity, collaboration and physical and mental wellbeing.
This is the ideal opportunity for prospective students interested in the creative industries to come and experience what is on offer and get first-hand information to assist them with their future career choices. Schools are invited to make group bookings. Limited space is available daily.
