SPROUT / ONTKIEM is set to open in Stellenbosch on Saturday, 5 August at the Ilse Schermers Art Gallery, featuring the collaborative works of acclaimed glassblower, Martli Jansen van Rensburg, and versatile mixed media sculptor, Izette Roos. Martli is a lecturer at TUT’s Department of Fine and Studio Arts and Izette an alum of the same Department.
This exhibition delves into the profound interplay between God, man and nature, unravelling the enigmatic beginnings of life, growth and transformation. Underlying SPROUT / ONTKIEM lies the genesis of new existence – a delicate and powerful beginning. Each sprout starts as a seed, initially inanimate, a mere glimmer of hope but brimming with incalculable potential and following a transformative process of coming alive.
The synergy between Jansen van Rensburg and Roos’s work forms a dialogue that bridges the gap between their distinct visual starting points and artistic disciplines and brings to life these nuanced themes. Despite stemming from distinct artistic dimensions, their kinship underpins their collaborative exploration, which began when they first crossed paths as TUT students in Pretoria during the mid-nineties, and has continued throughout their careers with various collaborations, of which SPROUT /ONTKIEM will be their latest.
SPROUT / ONTKIEM will be opened on Saturday, 5 August at 11:00 at the Ilse Schermers Art Gallery, 138 Dorp Street, Stellenbosch.
The walk-about will be held on Saturday, 5 August at 15:00.
