Structured Master's students from the Department of Performing Arts at the Faculty of Arts and Design will present an exploration of work from their Practice as Research Performance Studies module on 30 May at 18:30. These pieces are based on reflective practice, in which the students consider their own creative journeys and the development of their artistic identities.
The 2025 performances are showcased under the title ukuzal'ukuzolula towards resilience.
This isiXhosa proverb translates to "giving birth makes bones flexible."
It conveys the idea that facing challenges and taking on responsibilities can make a person more adaptable and resilient.
There are seven pieces all performed simultaneously, each presented as an independent durational performance. These process explorations are designed to be minimalist and repetitive in nature, which leads to reflexive realisations.
The spectator is invited to move around from one piece to the other at random, much like visiting a living activated exhibition of works. The spectator may choose to linger at any one piece, or to visit each piece more than once. Furthermore, spectators may be invited to participate only when encouraged to do so.
The performances take place in and around the Studio, next to the Rostrum Theatre on the Arts Campus.
Meet outside the Rostrum to be shown how to navigate the performances. Remember to dress warmly.
