Visit the paved area in front of Building 26 on the TUT Arts Campus on Thursday, 19 March, between 9:30 and 15:30, when second-year Painting students will be hosting a pop-up exhibition called 'Arts Campus Through Fresh Eyes.'

This is the students’ first project of the year.

“We call it their ‘24 Hour Painting’ project because they’re expected to complete it within 24 hours spread over a few days,” says Danielle Malherbe, Painting lecturer who oversees the project.

“The subject of their paintings is the TUT Arts Campus. They are asked to photograph a scene that appeals to them. It must include the important elements of landscape paintings, namely: linear or atmospheric perspective, fore, middle and background as well as the interplay between man-made elements (buildings) and natural elements (trees and vegetation),” says Malherbe.

“The students are made aware of outdoor light, the northern orientation of the sun and how it illuminates buildings, foliage, etc. The project also creates awareness of the difference between traditional landscape painting and urban landscape painting. The first yearns for unspoilt nature, while the latter celebrates urbanisation.”

“Although their starting point is a photograph, they are encouraged to explore their unique take on the scene, always being aware that they are making a painting and not simply copying a photograph. The results are varied and charming,” Malherbe adds.
