Artivism and Voice in the Age of Extinction

Voice and artivism are part of a conversation that can build and transform. But how? My theme takes as its central point the idea of the journey, the road and transformation. Can Artivism and Voice – stretched beyond the auditory - be part of a journey where we understand better what it means to be human? I will look firstly at moments of rupture where creativity and the imagination in the hands of particular artists set out innovative paths of action at difficult moments in South African history. I take an example from South African theatre of the 1970s and then move to consider song and Artivism in South Africa. Panning out more widely, how does the South African experience resonate with what took place in Russia with art and revolution in the early twentieth century (Berger) and what has that to do with our present dilemmas, and our strivings?  What journeys do we need to go on? As we look to the future and possible extinction how do we think about Artivism, Voice, transformation and new beginnings, new ways of being human, so that we have a past, a present but also a future?
