It is with profound sadness that the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has learned of the sudden passing of renowned performing artist, Gloria Bosman, on Tuesday, 14 March 2023.
Bosman, who studied opera at the former Technikon Pretoria (one of the three merging institutions that formed TUT), was one of the University’s most prominent alumni. She kept in touch with her alma mater and was especially close to the Faculty of Arts and Design.
TUT has followed with pride Bosman’s meteoric rise in the entertainment industry - both locally and internationally.
Last year, she returned to the Arts Campus, of which she always said she had fond memories, for the launch of the first alumni chapter at the University. At the event, she made a passionate plea for the advancement of the Arts in society and pledged her support to all efforts aimed at creating a people with a higher appreciation of the Arts.
In 2018, she performed to great acclaim at two extravaganza evenings held as part of the first TUT Arts Festival.
She boasted an impressive list of accolades, including two SA Music Awards (SAMA’s) and more than eleven nominations, as well as two KORA nominations.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences on behalf of the University community to Bosman’s family and friends, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of TUT, said that Bosman’s death and indisputable talent is not only a great loss for the music industry but also for humanity.
"Through her music, Bosman has contributed immensely to social cohesion and national reconciliation in South Africa. Her music constitutes a legacy of inspiration for current and future Performing Arts students,” Prof Maluleke added.
Prof Nalini Moodley, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design, echoed Prof Maluleke’s sentiments by saying: “Gloria Bosman was a giant in South Africa’s creative landscape and an inspiration to many. Her generosity of spirit in sharing of her knowledge, and her undeniable excellence was something that the Faculty will always remember. As a passionate performer, the Faculty of Arts and Design will miss her dearly. May she rest in peace with the knowledge that her sounds are embedded in the soul of South Africa.”
