Rostrum Roulette Festival showcases next generation of theatre talent

The Department of Performing Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Arts and Design presents the Rostrum Roulette Festival, taking place from 11 to 13 June, with daily performances beginning at 9:30.

Hosted at the Rostrum Theatre and Intimate Theatre, this dynamic festival highlights the creative work of third-year Theatre Arts and Performance students.

A longstanding and celebrated tradition within the department, the Rostrum Roulette Festival serves as a cornerstone of the third-year curriculum. It provides an essential platform for students to present their coursework in directing, applied theatre, acting and theatre technology, while engaging live audiences in bold, thought-provoking performance.

This year’s festival will feature 15-minute excerpts from a diverse range of texts, directed by eight student directors. The selected works include both renowned South African and international plays, reflecting a rich tapestry of global and local storytelling. Audiences can expect performances that interrogate contemporary issues, as young creatives critically engage with and respond to the complexities of today’s social landscape.

The festival’s Applied Theatre performances, presented in the Intimate Theatre, will showcase innovative, socially responsive work. These performances employ a range of theatre-as-methodology techniques and approaches, addressing themes of pressing social relevance. Through these pieces, students demonstrate the transformative power of theatre as a tool for dialogue, reflection and change.

The Rostrum Roulette Festival is not only a celebration of student achievement but also an opportunity for audiences to experience the voices, perspectives and artistic vision of a new generation of theatre-makers.
